Water Sources and hydrological richness

Pedra Talhada Reserve is located on a mountain chain that gives it an privileged situation for rainwater harvesting and transforming it into a regional water tower. Indeed its mountainous relief and its forest vegetation allow rainwater to soak into the ground and to be returned as sources. The Reserve thus has a good hydrologic system : 168 sources have been mapped within it. These sources have enabled the agricultural development as well as an economy mainly based on food crops and farm animals rearing.

The water flow is about 2000 litters per second (yearly average) that provides 300'000 people from five districts to access to piped water from this forest. This water represents an important wealth in this region located in the very center of the northeastern drought polygon. Indeed, the whole area suffers from recurrent and chronic drought and most of its inhabitants only receive water from the water trucks during half of the year.

Pedra Talhada’s area is considered as a green eldorado thanks to its many sources and its forest.
